Help & FAQ

How to get the clip out — and what to do when something doesn’t work

DualCam records your screen with your reaction, trims, captions and exports in minutes, from the browser. Here is everything people ask: real limits, plans, and the problems we know how to fix.

01What DualCam is

What is DualCam?

A reaction clipping tool: it records your computer screen and, at the same time, your phone’s camera as the reaction and your computer’s microphone. Then you trim the moment, frame the camera, choose vertical or horizontal, and export an MP4 ready to post.

Everything happens in the browser. Nothing to install on the computer or the phone.

Who is it for?

People who make clips — from streams, podcasts, plays, trailers, tutorials — with their face and voice on top, and post them vertical (TikTok, Shorts, Reels) or horizontal (YouTube).

It is not a recorder for long meetings or classes (the ceiling is 10 minutes per take), not an AI that picks moments for you — you pick the moment — and not a layers-and-effects editor.

Do I need to install anything or create an account?

Install: nothing. It runs in the computer’s browser (Chrome or Edge recommended) and the phone’s browser.

Account: recording from the computer needs a free account (Google or email). The phone needs no account — it joins by scanning the QR.

02Getting started

How do I record my first clip?
  1. Open dualcam.io on the computer and press “Start on your Computer”.You’ll see an advice screen (headphones, same Wi‑Fi), then the session code.
  2. Scan the QR with your phone. It joins as the reaction camera. Allow camera access when asked.
  3. Share your screen.Pick the screen, window or tab. Tick “Share system audio” if you want the computer’s sound in the clip.
  4. Press REC and react.Choose vertical or horizontal any time before recording. A countdown appears in the last minute.
  5. Stop, trim, frame and export. The recording uploads by itself while you adjust. You download an MP4.
How do I connect the phone?

Scan the QR shown on the computer, or open dualcam.io on the phone → “Join on your Phone” and type the 6-character code. Connecting takes about 10 seconds.

It works over the internet, so the same network is not required — but it is much smoother when phone and computer are on the same Wi‑Fi. The app tells you when they are not.

Can I record without a phone?

Yes. Press “Screen only” on the pairing screen, or just press REC without connecting the phone. The clip comes out full-frame screen with your microphone.

Why do you recommend headphones and the same Wi‑Fi?

Headphones: if the computer’s sound plays through speakers, your microphone picks it up again and it mixes with your voice. With headphones your voice stays clean and always above the screen audio.

Same Wi‑Fi: the phone’s video travels straight to the computer. On different networks it goes over the internet — it works, with more latency. If the network also blocks a direct connection, it goes through a relay, the slowest path. The app shows a notice before recording.

03Recording

How long can one take be?

Free: 5 minutes. Pro: 10 minutes. In the last minute a countdown appears on the computer and the phone, and at the limit the recording stops by itself and moves to the export screen.

The 10-minute limit is the web platform’s ceiling, not a plan restriction: the recording is held in the browser and uploaded whole on stop, and past 10 minutes memory, upload and render stop being reliable. It is a clip tool, not a stream tool.

Where does the clip’s audio come from?

Two sources, mixed automatically:

  • Your voice: the computer’s microphone. Pick which one in the 🎙️ selector before recording, and test it with the 🎚️ meter.
  • Screen audio: only if you ticked “Share system audio” when choosing what to share. If you didn’t, the clip has no computer sound — that is not a fault.

Your voice always sits above the screen audio; you can adjust both levels at export. The phone does not record audio: it only provides the reaction picture.

Vertical or horizontal?

One tap on the computer before recording (Horizontal 16:9 or Vertical 9:16). The phone camera is exported in the orientation it held for most of the take: if you started upright and turned sideways a few seconds in, it comes out horizontal.

Can I pause a recording?

No. Stop the take and record another. From each take you can cut several clips Pro, so a take doesn’t need to be perfect end to end.

04Exporting

How long does exporting take?

Minutes, not seconds — proportional to the clip’s length and quality. The export is composed on our servers, and the bar tells you which phase it is in.

To make it as fast as possible: as soon as you stop, the recording starts uploading by itself while you adjust the trim and camera (you’ll see “Uploading recording… X%”). When you press Export, if the upload is done, it goes straight to render. And the second clip from the same take uploads nothing.

Can I cut several clips from one recording?

Free 1 clip per recording. Pro as many as you like: change the trim and export again, without re-uploading.

What qualities are there?
  • Standard (all plans): HD, ideal for social.
  • Max Pro: less compression, sharper, bigger file.
  • 4K Pro: the final clip upscaled to 3840×2160. It adds no real detail — it enlarges the composed image — but YouTube gives 4K uploads more bitrate, so they look better there.
Why does my video have a watermark?

Because you are on the Free plan. Pro removes it from every export.

How do I trim the clip?

On the export screen, with the trim bar. Free export the full video or the first 30, 60 or 90 seconds. Pro free trimming: drag the handles wherever you want.

05Captions

How do I add automatic captions?

Captions (DualCaption) are Pro. Today they are generated from the Library: enable DualCam Cloud, export the clip (it is saved to your library), and from there generate the captions, edit them if you like, and burn them into the video.

We know it is a detour. We are working on making “with captions” a checkbox at export.

Which languages work?

Transcription detects the language automatically and works well in English and Spanish, among others. You can correct the text before burning it in.

07Common problems

“The recording produced no data”

The browser’s video encoder produced not a single byte. The two causes we have seen:

  • In Safari, a shared window with odd dimensions (e.g. 1408×881). The app now corrects them when sharing.
  • A screen-audio track that delivers no sound, which stalls recording on macOS. The app now detects it within two seconds and restarts without that track.

What to do: try again. If it repeats, open the 📊 panel before recording: the “Screen chunks” row must climb every second. If it stays at 0, stop and copy the diagnostics with ⧉ to send us.

The phone won’t connect
  1. Check both devices have internet. Same Wi‑Fi is ideal.
  2. Reload the phone’s page and scan the QR again — the code is the same.
  3. On mobile data the connection goes through a relay and can take longer to establish.
  4. If either device uses a VPN, turn it off to test.
The phone’s picture froze or disappeared

If the phone closed its browser or lost the network, the computer detects it, drops the frozen picture and shows the QR again. When you reopen the phone’s browser and rejoin with the same code, video resumes by itself in about 15–20 seconds.

If it doesn’t, press “Disconnect phone” on the computer and scan again.

The export failed

The error stays on screen in a red box with the reason. Your recording is not lost: it is still loaded and you can retry. If it fails again, press “⧉ copy diagnostics” in that box and send us the text.

If the message says you have used your 5 free export minutes for today, that is the Free plan’s daily budget. Come back tomorrow or move to Pro.

Does it work on Safari, Mac or iPhone?

Phone: yes, iPhone with Safari works as the reaction camera.

Computer: Chrome and Edge are verified on Windows and Mac. Safari as the recorder is under verification; if you use it and something fails, the ⧉ diagnostics help us a lot.

How do I report a bug?

The app keeps a technical log of the session in your browser (states, errors, codecs — never video or audio). To send it to us:

  • On the recording screen: 📊 → ⧉.
  • On the export screen: the ⧉ button top right, or the one in the red box if it failed.

It is copied to the clipboard. Paste it into your message to support along with what you were trying to do. Credentials and signatures are stripped from the log before it can be copied.

08Privacy

When does my recording leave my computer?

While recording, everything stays on your computer (and the phone’s video travels to it over an encrypted connection).

When you stop, the recording is sent automatically to our servers so the export is ready — before you press Export. That copy is deleted when you leave the export screen or, at most, after 2 hours of inactivity.

When you export, the final file is deleted from the servers after delivery, unless you have DualCam Cloud enabled.

Do you use my videos to train AI?

No. We don’t view them, analyse them or use them to train anything. When you request captions, the audio is sent to a transcription provider solely to produce the text.

How do I delete my data?

From the Library you can delete any video. From your account you can cancel the subscription and the account. The full detail — what we process, how long we keep it, and your rights — is in the Terms and Privacy Notice.

09Support

How do I contact support?

Copy the diagnostics with ⧉ (see Common problems), describe what you were trying to do and what happened, and send it through the support channel shown in the app.

The more specific — browser, OS, whether the phone was on the same network — the faster we fix it.
